Kick the Sick Series- Sleep
Oct 11, 2022Catch Some zzzzzzzz’s
There is nothing cuter than watching your baby sleeping. It can be frustrating when they don’t sleep through the night or when they take hours to fall asleep, like my son lately.
Sleep, especially rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, is important for toxin clearance, synaptic plasticity, as well as learning and memory consolidation. REM sleep periods occur every 90-120 minutes. If that period is interrupted, you can make up for it later since REM sleep is regulated by your nervous system. This is also the period when dreams occur.
The brainstem, which connects your brain to your spinal cord, regulates sleep. It is in charge of initiating and maintaining sleep. The vagus nerve has roots in the brainstem and is stimulated by the chiropractic adjustment. Therefore, when you get adjusted, you are stimulating the brainstem and regulating your sleep. That means a better night’s sleep!
My son was recently scanned because I wanted to check the function of his nervous system since his sleep has changed. Heart rate variability (HRV) and thermography scans were completed and will give an idea of how stressed his nervous system is.
To check the function of your and your child’s nervous system, and get a better nights sleep, contact us at Symmetry Chiropractic, experts in pediatric, prenatal, and family chiropractic care. Sleep longer and better!
